Healing takes time
Mayo Clinic and the American Dental Association’s MouthHealthy resource both describe osseointegration as a process that can take months. Even when a provisional restoration is placed quickly, bone healing is still occurring.
Common short-term issues
Mayo Clinic notes that swelling, bruising, implant-site pain and minor bleeding can occur after implant surgery. Your treating clinician should give you individualized instructions and a way to reach them.
Call the clinician if symptoms worsen
Cleveland Clinic lists warning signs including a loose implant, fever, pus/infection, swollen gums and swollen lymph nodes. Follow your treating team’s instructions and seek urgent care for severe or rapidly worsening symptoms.
Do not treat recovery like a vacation itinerary.
CDC warns that strenuous activity, swimming, sunbathing, alcohol and typical vacation activities during the postoperative period can interfere with healing. Build slack into a medical-travel itinerary.
